Are you focused on keeping your commercial food service space in tip-top condition? Or maybe you’re considering a renovation of your business or commercial space? Either way, it’s crucial to understand how to keep your millwork clean and well-maintained.
Millwork includes doors, molding, trim, custom cabinetry, shelving, custom storage, bars, back bars, and more. All types of custom wood or building products produced in a mill are considered millwork. Millwork can make up large portions of your commercial space, so it’s easy to see why regular maintenance is paramount for its lifespan!
Clean with Care!
Whether your space is outfitted to support large events, a busy bar crowd, or other thriving business, it’s going to get messy. Commercial millwork can withstand a lot in the course of a day! Do you know the best methods to clean your millwork? It may seem simple, but along with what to use, it’s almost more important to know what NOT to use.
Always avoid abrasive chemicals, polishes, or waxes that can damage the wood or prevent future touchups due to sticking to the wood. Millwork should only be cleaned using water on a cloth to wipe away dirt and debris. Be sure not to use too much water, and ensure the wood is dried promptly after wiping to avoid any damage.
Monitor for Moisture
Another aspect of millwork to keep in mind is that wood is a material that will either absorb or release moisture until it reaches the same humidity as the air around it. If the humidity is high, the wood will absorb the moisture and expand or vice versa. This means it’s imperative to maintain humidity between 25 and 55% by using the necessary appliances. If you’re unable to maintain proper humidity, wood can eventually shrink or expand to the point of cracking. This type of damage is avoidable with appropriate monitoring and maintenance.
Don’t Forget to Dust
Pesky dust particles build up on every surface! Aside from general cleanliness, keeping millwork free from dust is part of a great maintenance routine. Most dust particles come from the outdoors, and the particles can be damaging to surfaces if left unattended. Protect your millwork finishes from harmful particles by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
